OUR INVESTMENT SELECTION PROCESS
At Erickson Advisors our investment and fund selection process is grounded in fundamental research. This research provides for appropriate asset allocation and investment manager selection to help our clients meet their long-term goals.
Our team exercises an evidence-based, quantifiably driven investment process with a focus on long-term results. We analyze each asset class individually, and then build strategies based on modern portfolio theory. We believe in the principle of diversification to improve risk-adjusted returns, and utilize a wide variety of asset classes in our portfolios.
ALIGNING YOUR VALUES WITH YOUR INVESTMENTS
We work under a strict method of thoughtful investment for all our strategies. We are always aware of the underlying stocks and sectors in the mutual funds and ETFs we have chosen for our clients’ investments. We do not work on a solely socially responsible and sustainable platform for all clients but incorporate the environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria throughout all of our strategies in great measure. We know that for most investors you want to have your values incorporated into your investments but that ultimately your personal goals are most important to you. With that in mind, we incorporate many ESG criteria but only for select strategies do we solely invest for them. Our ESG portfolio strategies utilize the leading research and offerings available today to help us facilitate an investment voice in many of the areas of interest that center around gender equality and environmental concerns. The items that we are most focused on in large part because of requests from our clients are green building, smart growth, clean technology, water, and sustainable natural resources.
If you have a clear interest in how your money is invested within specific corporations and specific countries we have the inclination and ability to align those interests and your investments. We partner with organizations such as Croatan Institute located in Durham, NC and US SIF –The Forum for Sustainable and Responsible Investment to have an in-depth firm-wide knowledge base as well as a team we can call on for their area of expertise.
ERICKSON ADVISORS’ FUND SELECTION PROCESS
STEP 1 : Key Characteristics Screening
The first fund screening is to review characteristics including capitalization, style, and objectives.
STEP 2: Manager Consistency Screening
Long-term historical consistency is the ability to perform well and maintain risk and style characteristics in all markets and it is one of the most important determinants of future investing success. Step 1 and 2 reduce the wider selection of mutual funds and ETFs down to a concise number.
STEP 3: Portfolio Compatibility Screening
The remaining funds are evaluated to see how each with affect the current portfolio composition. A variety of historic and prospective (forecast) risk and return measures are evaluated to ensure compatibility with each model. This often results in several funds being removed from the selection list. The remaining funds are used in our clients’ investment portfolios.
STEP 4: Continuous Monitoring
Regular contact with the fund management team allows us to understand fund performance and ensure that management philosophy and investment objectives are being maintained. Fund performance is monitored and compared to an index, significant variances are researched, and the fund may be removed if inconsistencies occur from their peer group and/or investment policy changes are significant.
Once we execute on this screening and monitoring of the investment strategies we then overlay all our client’s custom needs and investment interests. Whether it’s a taxable account or retirement, request of specific ESG Criteria or hold of a stock that you just do not want to part with, we work with each client to customize their portfolio.
ERICKSON ADVISORS’ STOCK SELECTION PROCESS
For clients who desire an account composed of US Equities, our team will utilize experienced outside research consultants to provide us with a buy list that we will tailor to the individual needs of the investor. The stock selection and sell decisions will be further refined by the client’s tax position and cash flow needs.
A stock portfolio allows us to most clearly invest with intent on behalf of the client. This style of investment allows the client to be specific about what they may or may not want to invest in and have their money work for their financial interests as well as align with their values.
A diversified portfolio does not assure a profit or protect against loss in a declining market.
Investors cannot invest directly in indexes. The performance of any index is not indicative of the performance of any investment and does not take into account the effects of inflation and the fees and expenses associated with investing.
All investing involves risk, including the possible loss of principal. There is no assurance that any investment strategy will be successful.
Mutual Funds and Exchange-traded funds are sold only by prospectus. Investors should consider the investment objectives, risks, charges, and expenses carefully before investing. The prospectus, which contains this and other information about the investment company, can be obtained directly from the company or from your financial professional.
